COVERAGES

What Does Boat Insurance Cover?

The basic types of coverage included in a typical boat insurance policy includes:

In the event you were to cause an accident with your boat and someone is injured, Bodily Injury Liability coverage can help pay their medical bills and loss of income.

The Property Damage Liability Coverage helps pay for damages to another person’s vehicle, watercraft or property, if you were to cause an accident with your boat. Coverages like Pollution Liability Coverage and Wreckage Removal are typically included.

If you or one of your passengers were to get injured during an accident on your boat, the Medical Payments Coverage may help pay for resulting expenses that can incur such as hospital bills, medications or X-rays.

If an uninsured boater collides with your watercraft and you or one of your passengers are injured,  the Uninsured Watercraft Coverage  may help pay for the resulting expenses.

Collision Coverage helps pays for damage to your boat, motor, trolling motor, trailer, and permanent/portable boating equipment if you’re in a covered accident with another boat or object.

Additional Coverages to Consider

Every boat owners coverage needs of will vary from person to person. It’s always a good idea to talk with your insurance agent about coverage for the following watercraft components:

Boat Trailers

Boat accessories

Special equipment

Towing Trailers

Two important coverages you’ll want to make sure your policy includes are coverages to help pay for the cost of fuel spills and wreckage removal if there’s an accident on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of Florida boat insurance varies and depends on several factors. These factors includes:

  • Coverages: Coverage limits and deductibles you select on your policy
  • Watercraft:The type of watercraft and size you’re insuring
  • Location: Where you will use and store the boat
  • Claims: If you have a prior history of boat insurance claims, you may pay more to insure your boat.

A basic boat insurance policy does not cover theft. You will need Comprehensive Coverage to protect you against damage to your watercraft from incidents out of your control, which includes theft. Comprehensive  is usually required by your lender if you finance your boat and the coverage will need to be added on.

This is not required but it is not a bad idea to keep your insured boat inn storage. Theft, damage, and various other types of hazards will be covered by your boat insurance while your boat is stored.

During the off-season, it’s highly recommended to have insurance for your boat because hazards such as fire and theft can happen at any time.

Some boat insurance carriers offer the following additional coverages:

  • On-Water Towing and Emergency Services
  • Roadside assistance
  • Uninsured/underinsured boater
  • Mechanical breakdown coverage
  • Ice and freezing damage
  • Hurricane haul-out
  • Extending your navigation limits
